Biggest fleet between Britain and Ireland
Yesterday’s events brought me on a short trip to Dublin where Stena Line officially launched a new ferry on its Holyhead-Dublin route at Dublin Port. It was a great celebration and Stena Superfast X (number 10) is a beautiful 30 000 tonne ship just refurbished at a shipyard in Poland. The launch and the naming ceremony was performed by Stena Line Chairman Dan Sten Olsson and the Irish broadcaster Kathryn Thomas. It is impressive to note that Stena Line is now operating the biggest fleet between Ireland and Britain.
I am quite fascinated by the size of these ships. Stena Superfast X has a 2 km vehicle lane capacity and can accommodate 1 200 passengers. Last year I visited Holyhead to look at the port facilities and to visit the ferry Stena Explorer together with the then Welsh Minister David Jones. In 2010 I was present when one of the biggest ferries in Stena Line’s fleet was launched and named by the then Minister of Transport Philip Hammond. The ferry is now trafficking the route Harwich – Hoek van Holland.
