Great Discussion on Social Media in Oslo
During the summer I traveled to Oslo to give a presentation on social media at the Norwegian Heads of Missions meeting. It was a great pleasure to meet with my Norwegian colleagues to discuss an increasingly important topic.
Social media has become a very important tool for gathering information, but also to project soft power. It is inexpensive, overcomes longstanding problems of distance and time zones. In addition it is an excellent early warning system and a means of correcting misinformation quickly.
Today it is quite evident that foreign ministries have to be fast learners to stay relevant in this busy and competitive marketplace. The advantages of social media are clear, but there also challenges. As a diplomat you might make mistakes, but you cannot afford to make the wrong mistakes.
