Bergman – Scenes From a Marriage

Sir Trevor Nunn’s revival of Ingmar Bergman’s Scenes From a Marriage at St James Theatre is well worth seeing. The actors give an outstanding performance in portraying Johan, professor and Marianne, lawyer and their disintegrating marriage. It is a dark play and you should be prepared for some very destructive exchanges between a husband and wife. Scenes From a Marriage was first broadcast on Swedish Television in 1973.

It was then widely believed that the TV series were to blame for an increase in Swedish divorce rates. However, do not let that deter you as the play at St James Theatre has been getting great reviews.

I can only congratulate Sir Trevor Nunn for such a brilliant production. He was very kind to host a reception where he told  us about the play and his meeting with Ingmar Bergman many years back.

We watched this as a family when it was originally shown on TV. Two teenage daughters and parents who divorced a year later – you can imagine what the atmosphere on that sofa in Stockholm was like.

Water under the bridge now and I am sorry I missed this London production.
