When the famous Swedish chef Mathias Dahlgren visited London this week a taxi driver told him that he was surprised to find out that a Swedish restaurant had received the Asian Curry Award. In fact three Swedish restaurants won first prize in different categories at the Asian Curry Awards 2012 and there were two Swedish restaurants as runners up. The winners were Indian Garden, the Thai restaurant Orkidé as well as the Chinese restaurant Ho’s. The restaurants Shanti Soft Corner and Shanti Indisk Wok were runners up.
With around 10,000 restaurants, 80,000 employees and a turnover of £3.5 billion, the curry restaurant industry is an important part of the UK economy but also of its social fabric. In Sweden we are not there yet. However, the Swedish curry industry is slowly but surely gaining ground. The Indian Garden shows how a chef’s commitment to the trade can give fantastic results and serve as an inspiration for others. We were also very pleased that a Swedish Chinese restaurant and a Thai restaurant are getting international attention.
