The present, the past and the future

During the weekend a lot of the Swedish focus was on the landslide victory for Loreen in the Eurovision Song Contest. It will be a hectic but joyful spring to host the ESC as the 2013 Men’s World Ice Hockey Championships will be held in Stockholm and Malmö and in Turku in Finland between April and May next year.

On a less cheerful note, I read an interesting, but alarming article in today’s Daily Telegraph where the historian Antony Beevor, chronicler of European history, gave a chilling account on how he views the rise in militant nationalism in Europe.  Beevor just published his book “The Second World War”. There are many of us who have eagerly been awaiting the publication of the book. When I met Beevor last November in conjunction with the British launch of the Swedish writer Peter Englund’s book on the First World War “The Beauty and the Sorrow” he was working really hard to complete the last chapters of the book.
