House of Sweden in Tokyo 東京の「スウェーデンの家」

The building where the Swedish Embassy is located in Tokyo is a landmark. It was built in 1991 and has functioned as was intended ever since. The building has an exciting design, combining Swedish and Japanese solutions. The two architects, Michael Granit from Sweden and Yoshito Katoh from Japan, managed to create a building that has made its way into books about interesting places in Tokyo and TV programs about how interesting an Embassy can be. Inside the building there are also other offices representing our country. It has become a true House of Sweden. Over the years there have been countless exhibitions and seminars in the Bergman Hall and the Alfred Nobel Auditorium.

For a building in such a large city as Tokyo twenty-two years is a relatively long time and the city landscape is developing all the time. It therefore makes me very glad to note that the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the National Property Board of Sweden have just agreed to maximise the use of this building to its full potential. A long-term contract has been signed and there will be a few modernising projects inside the building to accomodate the needs of today. The building will continue to serve as a Swedish landmark for many more years to come.

Unfortunately, I also just learned that the Japanese architect, Yoshito Katoh, passed away a short while ago. Therefore, I would like to dedicate the positive news about how well this building will continue to be taken care of to him.
