A moment to remember

Yesterday I had the honour to hand over my Letter of Credentials to His Imperial Highness  Crown Prince  Naruhito, in his capacity as Acting Head of State. It was a beautiful sunny day and the ceremony inside the Imperial Palace was very impressive, beginning and ending with a short ride to and from the Palace in a horse-drawn carriage. This procedure is similar to what we do in Sweden, where ambassadors are taken in a horse-drawn carriage from the Ministry for Foreign Affairs to the Royal Castle for a meeting with the King. I have experienced similar ceremonies as ambassador in two other countries, Lithuania and the Republic of Korea, but it is not something you get used to, each ceremony is very special. I was accompanied by six diplomats from the Embassy and I think that it was a moment to remember for all of us.
